India defeated England by 50 runs in the first T20I of the series, played at The Ageas Bowl in Southampton on July 7, 2023. Hardik Pandya was the star of the show for India, scoring 51 runs off 33 balls and taking four wickets.

India won the toss and elected to bat first, scoring 198-8 in their 20 overs. Pandya was the top scorer for India, with Suryakumar Yadav (39) and Deepak Hooda (33) also making valuable contributions.

England's reply got off to a good start, with Jason Roy scoring 46 off 29 balls. However, the Indian bowlers struck back in the middle overs, with Pandya taking four wickets and Yuzvendra Chahal taking three. England were eventually bowled out for 148 in 19.3 overs.

Pandya was named Player of the Match for his all-round performance. He said after the match that he was "very happy" with his performance and that he was "looking forward to the rest of the series."

The second T20I of the series will be played at Edgbaston on July 9, 2023.
