Estonia legalizes same-sex marriage, a historic moment:
On June 20, 2023, the Estonian parliament passed a law to legalize same-sex marriage, making Estonia the first Baltic country and the 18th country in Europe to do so. The law will come into effect on January 1, 2024.

Same-sex couples have been able to enter into civil unions in Estonia since 2014, but the new law will give them the same rights and responsibilities as heterosexual couples, including the right to marry, adopt children, and inherit property from each other.

The passage of the law was met with widespread praise from LGBTQ+ rights advocates and politicians. Prime Minister Kaja Kallas said that the law was "a historic moment for Estonia" and that it "shows that we are a country that respects the rights of all people."

The law was opposed by some religious groups and conservative politicians, but it ultimately passed with a vote of 55-34 in the parliament.

The legalization of same-sex marriage in Estonia is a significant step forward for LGBTQ+ rights in the country. It is a sign that Estonia is becoming more inclusive and accepting of all people, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
